From People Who Have Been Through the Programs

NR

Nur Rashida

SME Owner · Johor Bahru

My accountant had been sending me statements every quarter for two years and I mostly just filed them away. After the starter course I started actually reading them. The annotated format was genuinely different — I could see exactly where to look. I noticed a pattern in my cash flow I had never caught before.

Operations Manager · Skudai

The workshop format suited me well because I learn better when I can ask questions in the moment. The facilitator was patient and clear about what was educational content versus what would require a professional's advice. I liked that distinction being explicit — it felt more honest than courses that blur those lines.

Even with a finance background, I found the comprehensive program added real clarity to how I think about statements holistically — particularly the cross-statement section. The reference library has become something I check back on regularly. The community is also more active than I expected.

Honestly, the first session of the workshop felt like a review of things I thought I already understood. By session three I realised I had been reading some things incorrectly for years. The worksheets were the key — doing the exercise rather than just reading the explanation made a real difference for me.

I needed to understand the financial statements of businesses I was consulting for without overstepping into advice territory. The Statmint approach — focused on reading, not advising — was exactly what I was looking for. The starter course gave me enough to have genuinely better conversations with my clients.

I enrolled in the comprehensive program after doing the starter course. The step up in depth was well calibrated — not overwhelming but also not a repeat of what I had already covered. The facilitator check-ins kept me on track during the busier weeks. The program is structured well for people with full-time commitments.

Learner Case Studies

The Starting Point

A Johor Bahru F&B business owner was receiving monthly management accounts from an outsourced bookkeeper. She could identify the headline figures but had no framework for reading the full document or understanding how the sections related to each other.

The Learning Path

She enrolled in the Starter Course, completing it over about two and a half weeks. The self-paced format suited her schedule. She then joined the workshop cohort to build on what she had learned and practise interpretation in a group setting.

The Outcome

She now reads through her monthly accounts before meeting her bookkeeper, coming with specific observations and questions. Her own description: "I went from signing off to actually reading what I was signing." She has since engaged her bookkeeper in more detailed discussions about her accounts.

The Starting Point

A management graduate starting his first role in a regional trading firm found himself encountering the company's financials in presentations and board materials without having a solid reading framework to draw on.

The Learning Path

He joined the Comprehensive Financial Statement Literacy Program and worked through all three statement modules, attending three of the five facilitator check-in sessions over the ten weeks.

The Outcome

He now participates more actively when financials are discussed in team briefings and has been able to follow the reasoning behind management commentary on the company's accounts. He described the cross-statement module as the part that changed his understanding most significantly.

The Starting Point

A sole trader running a small design studio wanted to understand the accounts she was producing — not for tax compliance, which her accountant handled, but for her own sense of how the business was doing between quarterly meetings.

The Learning Path

She completed the Reading the Numbers Workshop across five sessions, joining a cohort of eight other participants. The group discussion element helped her see that many of her questions were shared by others with similar situations.

The Outcome

She now produces a short monthly summary for herself based on her accounts — identifying whether her receivables are shifting, whether her cash position aligns with her profit picture, and what questions to raise with her accountant at the next meeting. The workshop gave her a framework she uses consistently.
